How many gallons of coffee do U.S. adults drink on an average day?
On April 14, 2026, the National Coffee Association reported that 66% of American adults drank coffee during the previous day. How many gallons of coffee does that represent?
The problem
Use the survey's reported 66% past-day consumption rate. Estimate the number of U.S. adults, average cups per coffee drinker, and ounces per cup, then convert the total to gallons.
Because Fermi problems target an order of magnitude, I normally use no more than two significant digits and write most calculations in scientific notation; the Fermi reference explains both conventions.

Matt's first pass
I treated the reported 66% as approximately two-thirds of all U.S. adults. I assumed four-fifths of the U.S. population is age 18 or older, the average coffee drinker has 1.5 cups per day, and there are 16 cups in a gallon.
U.S. adults ~= (3.3 x 10^8 people) x (4 / 5)
~= 2.6 x 10^8 adults
past-day coffee drinkers ~= (2.6 x 10^8 adults) x (2 / 3)
~= 1.7 x 10^8 coffee drinkers
At 1.5 cups per drinker:
daily cups ~= (1.7 x 10^8 drinkers) x (1.5 cups/drinker)
~= 2.6 x 10^8 cups
I did not remember the exact liquid-volume conversion, but I thought there were 16 cups in a gallon.
daily gallons ~= (2.6 x 10^8 cups) / (16 cups/gallon)
~= 1.6 x 10^7 gallons
~= 16 million gallons per day
My first-pass answer was therefore about 16 million gallons of coffee per day.

Pegs: 20/30. The adult-population and gallon-conversion pegs were strong; cups per drinker was the main miss.
Model: 30/30. Drinkers times cups per drinker divided by cups per gallon was exactly the right structure.
Math: 10/10. The arithmetic was clean.
Result: 20/30. The answer was about half of the calibrated estimate, comfortably within one order of magnitude.

Matt's population assumptions were strong. The United States has about 330 million to 340 million people, and using an adult share near 80% gives roughly 270 million adults.

The Spring 2026 survey's public media highlights report an average of 2.8 cups per coffee drinker per day. If we continue using an 8-fluid-ounce measuring cup, Matt's remembered conversion of 16 cups per gallon is correct.

The calibrated estimate is about 31 million gallons per day. Matt's 16-million-gallon answer is within a factor of two and comfortably within the correct order of magnitude. Nearly all of the difference comes from assuming 1.5 cups per drinker rather than the reported 2.8; his population and volume-conversion assumptions were very close.
There is still a definition caveat: a reported "cup" of coffee may not always correspond to an 8-ounce measuring cup. Mugs, espresso servings, and large cafe drinks make liquid volume less precise than cup count.
Post-check reflection

My assumptions about the proportion of the U.S. population made up of coffee-drinking adults were nearly dead-on. The main miss was cups per drinker per day: my estimate was low by more than a full cup, which brought my answer down to almost half of the given real-world number.
It also looks like I may need to update my U.S. population memory peg. I have been using 330 million, but it looks like the better default is closer to 340 million.
The corrected answer is near enough to what I calculated that it is not especially surprising. I also do not think this exercise had a tremendous impact on my interpretation of the news item. It is consistent with my daily observations that most people drink coffee and that the total volume of coffee consumed is enormous.
Recommended memory peg
Remember that one gallon contains 16 eight-ounce cups. Matt recalled this correctly, and it is a useful peg for beverages, containers, and other everyday liquid-volume estimates. The U.S. population peg of approximately 3.4 x 10^8 is also listed in the reference.
